Heavy Sliding Door – Large-Format Sliding Performance for Demanding Applications
It is not simply an oversized version of a standard sliding window - it is a purpose-engineered structural system designed to handle the specific challenges of very large glazed panels, high foot traffic, and sustained exposure to wind, rain, and mechanical stress. SKATE's heavy sliding doors are built on the 135-series aluminium profile platform with 2.0 mm – 3.0 mm wall thickness, stainless-steel multi-track rail systems, and multi-point locking mechanisms that provide both the smooth, effortless operation expected of a luxury door and the hurricane-grade structural performance demanded by high-exposure coastal and commercial installations.
What Defines a "Heavy" Sliding Door
The critical difference between a heavy sliding door and a standard sliding door lies in three engineering parameters:
It panels may weigh 150–400 kg per sash, driven by their large glass area and reinforced aluminium frame sections. The roller system must support this weight smoothly across the full track length without deflection or accelerated wear.
Standard sliding windows use lightweight nylon or zinc rollers on a simple aluminium track. The doors use multi-point stainless-steel or duplex-hardened roller assemblies running on inlaid stainless-steel track rails, providing the load capacity and wear resistance for decades of daily operation.
As panel dimensions increase, the perimeter of unsealed joint between panel and frame grows proportionally. SKATE's heavy sliding door uses brush pile seals supplemented by compression gaskets at the panel meeting stile and structural weather bars at the head and sill to maintain Class C4 wind and E1000 Pa water tightness across the full panel perimeter.

Track Configuration Options
SKATE heavy sliding doors are available in two-track (XO) and three-track (OXO / XXO) configurations:
Two-Track (XO)
One fixed panel and one sliding panel. Provides a maximum clear opening of approximately 50% of the total door width. This is the most common configuration for residential applications.
Three-Track (OXO)
Two fixed outer panels and one central sliding panel, or two sliding panels flanking a fixed central section. Provides more flexibility in the proportion of opening to fixed area.
For very wide openings exceeding 4,000 mm, SKATE can produce four-track configurations with multiple sliding panels that stack behind each other when open, providing a near-full-width opening.
Panel Sizes and Glass Options
Individual sliding panels in SKATE's heavy sliding door system can be produced up to approximately 3,000 mm wide × 2,800 mm tall, depending on glass weight and aluminium wall thickness. Tempered glass is standard for all panels at this scale due to its superior impact resistance. Laminated tempered glass options are available for hurricane-rated and security applications, while Low-E argon-filled glass configurations provide energy performance within the required standards for the panel dimensions.
Smart Operation Options
Large, heavy panels can be challenging to operate manually - particularly for elderly or mobility-impaired users, or in commercial applications where hundreds of daily operations occur. SKATE offers motorised operation for heavy sliding doors: a concealed linear motor or rack-and-pinion drive system connected to the sliding panel sash, operated by a wall switch, touch sensor, or remote control. Automatic soft-start and soft-stop prevents slamming and reduces wear on the hardware system.
Security & Locking
The doors include multi-point locking as standard: hook bolt locks engage at multiple points along the meeting stile and the sill when the handle is turned, resisting both lateral forced entry attempts and panel lifting. An anti-lift device prevents the sliding panel from being raised off its track. For additional security, a key-locking handle cylinder and secondary floor bolt locks are available as accessories.
Applications
The doors are the preferred choice for: indoor-outdoor living connections in luxury homes; large patio and terrace openings; commercial retail shopfronts; hospitality venues, restaurants, and bars with retractable facade walls; beachfront and coastal villas where corrosion resistance and wind rating are critical; and architectural projects where the sliding door is a visual statement element of the design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much force is required to slide a heavy sliding door panel?
A: With correctly maintained stainless-steel rollers and a standard (non-motorised) panel up to 200 kg, the operating force should not exceed 80–100 N - comparable to opening a car door. Heavier panels benefit from motorised operation.
Q: Can heavy sliding doors be used in hurricane-rated construction?
A: SKATE can supply doors with laminated safety glass and reinforced track and locking systems rated to specific design wind pressures. Please provide your project location and relevant local wind standard for specific product selection.
Q: What maintenance do heavy sliding door tracks require?
A: Annual cleaning of the track channel and application of a PTFE-based dry lubricant to the roller assemblies. The track weep holes should be checked and cleared periodically to ensure drainage function.
