The type of window - also known as awning windows - are designed to open outward from the base of the sash while remaining hinged at the top of the frame. This distinctive opening action creates a natural canopy effect: the open sash deflects rainwater away from the interior opening, allowing fresh-air ventilation to continue even during light to moderate rainfall. How Top-Hung Windows Work
The top-hung sash is supported by friction stays - adjustable stainless-steel arms connecting the top corners of the sash to the outer frame jambs - that allow the sash to be pushed outward at the bottom and held in any open position from a minimal crack to a maximum opening of approximately 200 mm from the frame face. The friction stays resist both wind gusts (which might force the sash to close or fly further open) and the weight of the glass (which might cause the sash to drop under gravity when open). The result is reliable, hands-free ventilation at precisely the angle you choose.
SKATE's UPVC windows top hung incorporate a winding handle or push-bar release that operates the locking mechanism and initiates the opening action without requiring the user to reach up to the sash itself - particularly convenient when the window is positioned at height above a kitchen worktop, bathroom cabinet, or other obstruction.
