Single UPVC Window – Cost-Effective Ventilation, Lasting Quality

The type of window - also known as a single-hung window - is a vertical sliding window in which the lower sash moves up and down for ventilation while the upper sash remains fixed in place. This simplified sliding mechanism makes single UPVC windows one of the most economical window options on the market without sacrificing the clean visual appearance and functional ventilation performance that homeowners expect. This window is engineered with multi-chamber uPVC profiles, high-performance Low-E glazing options, and durable hardware to deliver lasting value across a wide range of residential and light commercial applications.

Single vs Double Hung - Understanding the Difference

The key distinction between a single-hung window and a double-hung window is the number of operable sashes. In a single-hung window, only the lower sash slides, while the upper sash is permanently sealed. This design offers several practical advantages: the fixed upper sash provides a more rigid, airtight frame section that can accommodate larger glass sizes without risk of sash misalignment over time; the balance mechanism is simpler and less expensive; and the overall frame system is lighter, making single-hung windows easier to install in framed wall openings.

For most residential applications where ventilation is only required from the lower portion of the window - as is the case in the vast majority of living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens - the single UPVC window provides all the functionality needed at a noticeably lower price point than a fully double-hung alternative.

Thermal Efficiency of uPVC

The uPVC frame material used in SKATE's single UPVC windows is a multi-chamber hollow profile. The chambers - typically three to five air-filled voids within the extrusion cross-section - act as successive thermal barriers, progressively reducing heat flow from the warm interior surface to the cold exterior surface. This inherent thermal efficiency means uPVC window frames consistently outperform aluminium frames on thermal performance without any additional thermal break component.

When combined with double Low-E argon-filled glazing, SKATE's window achieves whole-window U-values of approximately 1.6–1.8 W/m²K - well within ENERGY STAR requirements for zones 1–3 in North America, and meeting the thermal requirements of Part L (UK) and NCC (Australia) for standard residential construction.

Tilt-In Cleaning

Although only the lower sash opens in a single UPVC window, SKATE's design incorporates tilt-in functionality for the lower sash. By pressing the tilt latches at the top corners, the lower sash swings inward, allowing the exterior glass face to be cleaned conveniently and safely from inside the building. This feature is particularly valuable on upper floors where exterior cleaning would otherwise require scaffolding or window cleaning services.

Hardware & Security

The lower sash is secured in the closed position by a cam-type meeting rail lock that compresses the weatherstripping seal while simultaneously preventing the sash from being lifted from outside. An optional keyed lock and secondary sash pin bolts provide enhanced security for ground-floor and accessible window locations.

The balance mechanism - typically stainless-steel spiral balances - is concealed within the slender side jamb profile, maintaining the clean, uncluttered appearance of the frame interior.

Colour Options

SKATE single UPVC windows are available in standard white, cream, and grey uPVC, as well as woodgrain foil-wrapped finishes that simulate Golden Oak, Rosewood, Irish Oak, and mahogany appearances without requiring painting. The foil laminate is factory-applied under controlled conditions and bonded to the uPVC profile surface for long-term colour stability.

Applications

They are commonly specified for: standard residential new build and replacement projects across North America and Australia; budget-sensitive housing developments; coastal and high-humidity locations; properties in conservation areas where white-painted sash windows are the traditional finish; light commercial buildings; and projects where ease of installation and supply-chain simplicity are priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is a single UPVC window less secure than a double-hung window?

A: No. The fixed upper sash is structurally more rigid than an operable upper sash, providing a more secure frame overall. The lower sash lock provides comparable security to double-hung window locks.

Q: Can I add an insect screen to a single UPVC window?

A: Yes. SKATE supplies compatible full-frame and half-frame insect screens for single-hung UPVC windows, in both fixed and retractable configurations.

Q: What glass thickness is standard?

A: Our standard supply is 5+12A+5 mm (22 mm total) double-glazed units. Low-E, argon-filled, and triple-glazed alternatives are available on request.

Q: Our standard supply is 5+12A+5 mm (22 mm total) double-glazed units. Low-E, argon-filled, and triple-glazed alternatives are available on request.

A: Modern uPVC profiles are UV-stabilised and will not yellow, warp, or lose structural integrity under normal exposure conditions. The expected service life of a quality uPVC window is 30+ years.
